Maia's First Grade Teacher Says:
Maia is making good progress in first grade. She is currently reading at benchmark. She needs to work on retelling a story noting details and putting the details in sequence. In writing, she needs to work on rereading her work to make corrections, paying attention to capitals, and using punctuation marks where needed. We are working on carrying over on the correct spelling of previously learned words and chunks in daily writing activities.
In math, Maia is demonstrating a good basic understanding of simple math facts and skills. She needs to work on problem solving in a variety of situations and explaining and writing about the problem solving process.
Maia completes her work in a timely manner. We are working on increasing the amount of time that she can stay on task and read independently.
Continue to have Maia read and record her reading nightly. Also give her many opportunities to write on a regular basis. She is respectful and gets along well with all of her classmates. I enjoy having her in class and look forward to watching her make even more progress in first grade!!
Every single mark Maia made was the highest mark she can get. They don't do letter grades at our new school instead they have a system of achieving the standard, progressing toward the standard and limited progress toward the standard. Plus they have an additional system of marks...+ mark for exceeds expectations, checkmark for meets expectations and a diamond symbol for below expectations. Maia recieved all acheiving standards and exceeding expectation marks...except for one progressing towards standards!!!!! Way to go girl!!!
Okay here's what I like about this whole thing. Maia is doing excellent in school. She is one of only a few in her class that is not receiving any intervention at all. But yet her teacher still gave us ways to help her keep exceeding. Instead of having the attitude that Maia is doing great work already, let's just let her coast, her teacher is pushing her ahead. Challenging her to do her best and keep learning!!
Maia has made lots of new friends this year and she is very accepting and interested in others cultures. She has learned about true heroes and Helen Keller with whom she is now completely fascinated. She has already won 3 responsibility awards!! And she melted her teacher's heart when she was "caught" trying to help teach her whole class how to tie knots for a special project. Her teacher said she got a little teary watching Maia encourage each student individually. She gave them an "I CAN" attitude and every boy and girl did learn to tie those knots that day!! Maybe she really will be a teacher.
In addition to her regular teacher her specials teacher's also had great things to say.
In art class she earned very high marks and her teacher says she "has a great attitude". She is learning a lot about abstract art and in particular has studied an artist named Wassily Kandinsky. She is learning about geometric and organic shapes and in turn using those shapes to create wonderful faces, animals and creatures.
Her music teacher says she listens attentively. She also received very high marks here for recognizing and performing rythmic patterns and demonstrating musical skills through improvisation, listening and/or playing instruments. Apparently she also demonstrates knowledge of historical and cultural aspects of music. Who knew?
She has learned two new dances so far, YESH from Israel, and La Raspa from Mexico. She has also learned to enjoy a game called Ye Toop Doram, that children in Afghanistan and Iran play. Now this class is where her less than stellar grade came from......SINGING. My poor girl can't sing. Wonder where she got that trait from? Oh yeah...that would be me!!!
Miss Maia also received top marks in Phys Ed class. She got 4 acheiving standards here as well!!!
Maia is so well liked at her school that she was hand selected to participate in a community program in conjunction with the local Chamber of Commerce. When her guidance counselor called to ask if she was allowed to participate she explained to me how the school knew that Maia would represent her school in a very positive way!!!
WAY TO GO MISS MAIA!!!! I COULDN"T BE MORE PROUD OF YOU BABY GIRL!!!!

That is Mrs. Bok. I didn't have a picture of her with her class this year so that picture got recycled!! LOL.
BJ that is Maia's kindergarten teacher.
Just wanted to add that Maia's teacher this year is much more teacherly. You won't catch her in a thong with her "girls" hanging out. And she most definitely won't be giving my Daddy a free "show". :)
